Tips for Peers
Based on insights gained from past interviews, here are some useful tips:
- Volunteers at shelters must generally be 18 or older.
- Shelters often have a greater need for men’s clothing and socks, as women tend to donate more frequently.
- Donate non-perishable food items that can be stored easily.
- Check local regulations regarding tents and sleeping bags before donating — don’t rely on assumptions.
- Reach out to local shelters or outreach programs to ask about specific needs or ways to help.
- Be a good listener. People experience homelessness for different reasons, so avoid generalizations and be mindful of individual circumstances.
